23. Naguib Sawiris – $3 billion
Naguib Onsi Sawiris is an Egyptian billionaire that got himself swept into the country’s roller-coaster politics.
Sawiris is the Executive Chairman of Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding and ranks as the third richest man in Egypt. He has the merit of founding the Free Egyptians Party once the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 ended Mubarak’s decade-long reign.
With total assets estimated at $3 billion, Sawiris is best known for making the preposterous offer to buy an island from either Greece or Italy to settle Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict. His dream made international headlines back in 2015, and, despite being economically feasible, was rejected on accounts of the legal implications that would have derived from such a move.
