27. Hans-Adam II – $3.5 billion
Hans-Adam II is the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein and the wealthiest European monarch.
Like with Prince Albert of Monaco, geography can be misleading when searching for billionaire politicians. For reasons that escape our fact-hungry mind, the small nation stuck between giants Switzerland and Austria is a haven for rich folks and their tax-scared fortunes.
The 72-year-old prince has around $3.5 billion to his name. His family owns Liechtenstein Global Trust (LGT) – the largest family-owned private wealth firm in Europe. Add sumptuous palaces with views of the Alps and swathes of land, and you no longer need an accountant.
Still, we wonder why some European nations prefer being ruled by uncontested billionaire royals? Why bother with corrupt politicians, elections, and all the turmoil that derives? It’s much simpler this way.
