3. Rostam Aziz – $1 billion
Rostam Aziz is the wealthiest politician of Tanzania and the first to reach the $1 billion mark.
The 53-year-old served as a member of the Tanzanian Parliament representing Igunga Constituency between 1994 and 2011. He is credited with praiseworthy humanitarian work like providing access to potable water and building a dispensary in each village of Igunga.
Rostam was born into an Iranian family that came to Tanzania around 1850. He made most of his fortune by controlling an outstanding share of the country’s largest mobile company – Vodacom. The Aziz family currently has a joint ownership over the port of Dar es Salaam, the gateway to East Africa.
