37. Serge Dassault – $8 billion
Serge Dassault might not be that well known to the public but his $8 billion fortune is enough to raise an eyebrow or two.
The 92-year-old senior of French politics was not entirely self-made. Serge inherited the Dassault Group from his father and further expanded its operations to a breathtaking level.
Dassault Aviation, a subsidiary of the group, now manufacturers of military, and business jets. Serge Dassault also owns “Le Figaro,” the oldest national daily in France, and one of the most reputed newspapers in the world.
Jailed during World War II for refusing to collaborate with the invading Germans, Serge Dassault serves as a Senator since 2004 from the Union for a Popular Movement. As expected given the age, he is an advocate of conservative positions on the economy and social issues.
