4. Islam Karimov – $1 billion
Islam Karimov accumulated a vast fortune that now is in the hands of his daughters.
If you don’t remember, the man that ruled Uzbekistan since its inception as an independent state passed away in 2016, leaving behind not only a debate surrounding the one entitled to succeed but also assets valuing more than $1 billion. Karimov was one of the richest and most influential political leaders of the region, one who skilfully maintained close ties with both Russian and the US.
As it often happens, Karimov’s grip to power came with the cost of grave human rights abuses. Uzbekistan never had genuine democratic elections, and some go as far as to say that Karimov’s regime was a blood-sucking parasite for the taxpayers’ money.
