9. Vladimir Gruzdev – $1.2 billion
Vladimir Gruzdev is a colorful character of Russian politics.
As you noticed so far, being an oligarch makes it easy to get a public office in Putin’s backyard. Gruzdev served in the Foreign Intelligence Service between 1991 and 1993 before founding the trading company “The Seventh Continent.”
Lured by politics, Gruzdev sold its shares for an impressive $1 billion and dedicated himself to scaling the ranks. A seat in the Moscow City Duma was followed by an election in the State Duma in 2003, and by a later appointment as Governor of the Tula region.
Unfortunately, Gruzdev resigned in 2016. Official reports state that he wanted to dedicate more time to the family, but we all presume what happened. Chances are Vladimir Gruzdev did something to upset Putin and is now on the regime’s black book.
